Description: 
Artemisinin is a drug derived from the Asian plant Artemisia annua. This aromatic plant has fern-like leaves and yellow flowers.
For more than 2,000 years, it has been used to treat fevers. It's also an effective treatment for malaria.

Artemisinin is extracted from the plant Artemisia annua, an herb used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Artemisinin and its derivatives are both sesquiterpene lactones with unusual peroxide bridges. This endoperoxide 1,2,4-trioxane ring is responsible for its antimalarial properties. Few other natural compounds with such peroxide bridges are known.

Artemisinin and its derivatives have been used to treat malaria and parasitic (worm) infections. Their advantage over other drugs is that they kill the parasite more quickly and kill all the life cycle stages of the parasite.

Other potential uses include as a treatment for inflammation or bacterial infections or headaches, though there is no scientific data to support this.
