Thanaka (also spelled Thanakha) is a tropical plant species that is native to the central part of Myanmar. It also grows in Sri Lanka, the western parts of India, and the northwestern part of the Himalayas. Thanaka is a traditional part of Myanmar's indigenous medicines, with its bark used by Myanmar women as a beautifying and skin-protecting cream. The bark is ground up into a fine yellow powder and blended with water to form a paste.
The use of Thanaka can be traced back to ancient Myanmar history, dating back as far as the 14th century. After Western cosmetic companies started bringing their products to Asia, it didn't take them long to realize that Asia is a smorgasbord of natural skin care ingredients - Thanaka Extract being one of them.
