Artemisinin is found in the flowers and leaves of the Chinese herb Artemisia annua, but not in the stems. It is a terpenoid compound with very low content and a very complex biosynthetic pathway.
It is now known that artemisinin biosynthesis can be carried out in three ways.
One is to regulate the key enzymes that control artemisinin synthesis and add biosynthetic precursors to increase the content of artemisinin; the other is to activate the key enzymes.
